A Pro's Guide to Attacking in Clan Wars

I'm made of pink goo!
I think you've all experience it before, the horror of having your attacking troops 1-shot by a stack of wizards who popped out from the clan castle. I mean what the *#$& I even dropped a healing potion and they still all died in 1 hit, this game is so broken!

Use this simple trick to not suck at attacking and crying when you keep getting 0 or 1 stars and everyone on your clan starts making fun of you and you just wish that you weren't really that bad but you can't help it and sometimes you just want to throw Clash out the window but then who will take care of your precious base?

The astute reader has already guessed where I'm going with this post. Anyone?

As I've said time and time again, the secret to defense is your clan castle troops! So it follows that the secret to attacking would be to make sure you kill all those clan castle troops! If you follow my simple 3 step plan you will experience epic success beyond your wildest dreams! (unless you go with the all-WB army).

  1. Pull out your opponents clan troops, BK and AQ
  2. Kill them with fire!
  3. Continue your attack

Step 1: Pull Clan Castle, BK and AQ

Fortunately for us, step 1 is usually the easiest. Players consistently undervalue their clan castle. To call upon an old friend (thanks bigkel1):

Looks like we can just drop a barb or two to pull the clan castle!
It looks like we can easily pull the clan castle (just drop a barb in the white circle). Pulling the AQ and BK will be a little more difficult in this base but looks like we can drop a giant close to that mortar and aggro them.

Pro tip: Once aggroed the BK and AQ will pursue the enemy until there is no one left on the map, then return to their 'home.' Use this to your advantage!

Pro tip: when scouting you can tap directly on the AQ/BK to see their aggro range. Timing is very important so wait until they are in good position before dropping your troops.

Now let's take a look at a harder example, a fellow called Meatkat:

At least the BK is easy!
This one looks a little trickier, we'll have to drop a hog rider or two and hope they can pull it, or maybe a giant from the North? In either case this is going to be a lot harder and we'll have to spend significantly more troops on pulling (more on that later).

This brings us to the list of best pullers:
  • Barbarians: works because he'll run close to buildings and can take a hit or two, good for aggroing AQ/BK
  • Giants: works great because he'll run toward the nearest defense (usually this is toward the clan castle) and can take many hits from defense and still stick around. good for emptying clan castle
  • Hog Riders: works the best because they can hop over walls to pull aggro, deploy a giant first to make them live longer!

Step 2: Kill them with (archer) fire

Usually I see someone take a lightning potion, spend a good minute lining the enemy clan troops up, then drop the lightning potion, killing 2-3 archers and damaging the wizards. Then they drop a mass of barbs and archers (many of whom are killed by the wizards because they are bunched) and finally kill everything off after using 40+ troops, a spell and usually AQ/BK.

That is the way of the noob. You've used one of your precious spell slots to kill 3 archers! :(

What you should do: lure the troops, BK and AQ into a corner (out of range from defenses!) surround them with archers and distract them with barbarians. Then use your BK to take out the enemy AQ and off you go. This works well even against high level dragons!

Why this works:
  1. If your archers are spaced correctly you won't lose more than 1-2 at a time from the wizards/dragon
  2. Clan troops attack the closest thing (which will be your barbs) so your archers should be fine
  3. when enraged, your BK can 2 shot an equal level AQ
  4. The enemy BK attacks so slowly he doesn't do much damage and can distracted with barbs
  5. You don't waste one of your precious spell slots
When this will not work:
  1. When you bunch your archers and they get killed
  2. When you don't kill the enemy AQ (her fast attack is deadly!)
  3. When you try to do this in range of base defenses
How many to take:
  1. 20 archers
  2. 20 barbs
When you start to get the hang of it you can start reducing the numbers but that should give you a good start!

Step 3: Continue with your attack!

Good luck soldier!
