Why is it important?
Let's start small with a player that has a level 5 town hall fully maxed. That's 3 cannons, 3 archer towers, 1 mortar, 1 wizard tower and 1 air defense. Let's assume that ALL of these defenses are shooting all the time, thats a total of 338 single target DPS (most from the air tower) and 17 splash DPS!
Now let's compare those numbers against the clan castle troops you could find in their town hall (pop 15). Assuming this has been maxed out with 3 lvl 6 wizards and 3 lvl 6 archers, you're looking at 480 splash damage and 66 single target damage.
This is summarized nicely in the below graph. Notice that the clash castle deals an ABSURD amount of splash damage compared to your base defense and more damage overall. Keep in mind that clan castle troops are mobile so they can be attacking most of the time they are alive.
So big deal you're saying who cares about a measly town hall level 5. Alright, let's take a look at a fully maxed town hall level 9. We'll leave purely air defenses out since we're mostly concerned about defending against hog attacks at this level.
At level 9 we have (against ground targets only) 1389 single target DPS and 193 splash DPS from our base defenses. That's assuming they are all firing all the time (which they most likely won't be except maybe the xbow). Give that you have a 30 pop clan castle with 7 lvl 6 wizards and 2 lvl 6 archers you have 44 single target DPS and 1260 splash DPS. And since they can walk around they will doing damage most of their lives. That graph looks a little something like this:
The same is true of all the levels in between and level 10: the clan castle is your most important defensive building! If you can keep those clan castle troops alive you have a very good chance of getting 0 or 1 starred. More on how to do this here.
So what does this mean for offense? If you can draw out and kill the clan castle troops first, your attacks won't have to power through all that extra splash DPS! This means your giants/dragons/hogs will be able to romp around in a giant stack with near invincibility and get you the three stars you deserve! More on how to do this here.
In summary: clan castle FTW! Don't be a dummy and put it outside your base.
